Sure, you could just go to the gym to exercise, but yoga is much more than just a physical workout. Besides increasing flexibility and physical strength, yoga also produces a calm, clear mind and can help balance and free the emotions.
YOGA EMPHASIZES STRENGTH, BALANCE, AND FLEXIBILITY
As you grow older, it is common for your range of motion and ease of movement to diminish. A consistent yoga practice can bring the suppleness of youth back into your body and help you become more flexible, durable, and stronger. Yoga can help you learn to focus your physical and mental energy more effectively and thereby be more vital, creative, and efficient in all your activities.
YOGA ENCOURAGES GREATER HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the majority of health problems reported to Medical Doctors are stress related. Yoga has a calming effect on your nervous system. As you move your body through poses that require balance and concentration, your focus is naturally drawn away from your busy, chaotic day and onto your present, peaceful movement.

YDM provides quality, alignment-based yoga classes for individuals who desire greater overall health and wellbeing. All of our classes are uniquely and intelligently sequenced to provide you with opportunities for consistent progress and refinement in your yoga practice. Our teachers and staff are experienced, caring, and available to assist you in making the most out of your time at the studio.
CAN I DO YOGA EVEN THOUGH I AM NOT FLEXIBLE?
Yoga is uniquely designed to help you become more flexible over time – at your own pace. Yoga Del Mar offers a variety of classes that complement your level of strength and flexibility. Our teachers are trained to observe students and offer variations of more difficult poses, so that you can gain the greatest benefit from each pose at your particular level of expertise.
WHERE DO I START?
If you are new to yoga, Hatha 1 is the perfect place to begin. At Yoga Del Mar we offer many options for beginning yoga students.

Gentle & Restorative yoga classes
- Monday 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM (Ageless Yoga)
- Wednesday 12:45 – 1:45 PM (Ageless Yoga)
- Wednesday: 7:30 – 8:45 PM (Restorative Yoga)
- Thursday 6:00 – 7:15 PM (Yoga for Healing)
- Friday 6:00 – 7:15 PM (Candlelight Yoga)
MELT classes (not yoga, but beginners are welcome!)
- Monday: 12:30 – 1:45 PM
- Tuesday 12:15 – 1:30 PM
- Wednesday: 7:45 – 9 AM
- Thursday: 12:15 – 1:30 PM
- Saturday: 8:00 – 9:15 AM

WHAT DO I BRING TO MY FIRST CLASS?
You will want to wear clothing that is comfortable and allows you to move without any restriction. In some yoga poses you will be bending forward, so you will want to wear a top that won’t fall over your head, exposing your upper body. Shoes and socks (unless they are yoga socks) are removed before class, so you don’t need to worry about those.
If you have your own yoga mat, please bring it. If you do not yet have a yoga mat, we rent mats for $2 and also have mats for sale.
Please leave your cell phone in your car or at home. Yoga is your time to unplug!
DO I HAVE TO SIGN UP ONLINE?
You are always welcome to sign up and/or pay for your class(es) online, but it is not necessary. You may sign in and pay when you are at Yoga Del Mar. If you do sign up online and then are unable to come to class, we will remove you from the class so you will not be charged.
WILL IT BE TOO HARD?
Our classes are not about competition or having a pose look exactly the same for everyone. The focus in our yoga classes is about what is beneficial to you, how to help you improve, become more aware of yourself in each pose and respect how you are feeling on that particular day. It is not about touching your toes. It is about being able to go a little further than you have before, stretching yourself without injury and enjoying the shared experience with others in the class.
Our skilled, caring and talented teachers will help you gain the most benefit from each pose and will support you in any way they can.
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GET STARTED, ESPECIALLY IF I AM OUT OF SHAPE?
Most Hatha 1 yoga classes are suitable for new students. You are always encouraged to work at your own pace and not push yourself too hard, especially in the beginning. If you have a particular concern, come into the studio between classes and speak with one of our staff members or call or email us. We are always happy to help in anyway we can.
WHAT IF I’M OVERWEIGHT?
Yoga is so much more than a weight-loss program, but it has helped many people shed extra pounds, even some who have spent years trying to slim down in other ways without success. Studies show that a complete yoga program – asana, breathing techniques, and meditation – can peel off the pounds. The regular practice of yoga also helps you become more sensitive to what’s going on inside your body – this awareness helps you detect not only whether, say, your hamstring is tight but also whether your stomach is already full.
Many people find that practicing yoga helps them feel better about themselves, regardless of the shape or condition of their body or what kind of day they are having.

WHEN AM I READY TO MOVE TO HATHA 1-2?
Some students continue to take Hatha 1 for years or decades, others move to the Hatha 1-2 classes after they have mastered the basic postures, breathing, and have cultivated enough flexibility and strength to be ready for more challenging poses and a faster pace. You can also ask your yoga teacher for feedback.
